Since 2016, Supponor has been developing and commercially deploying a Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards application – a solution, designed from the ground up, to support and withstand the unique physical and environmental conditions and needs of top tier Hockey. The Supponor virtual advertising platform and Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards have been successfully deployed at scale in the NHL across the World Cup of Hockey and the All Stars, delivering up to twelve virtually modified feeds live for four different broadcast productions simultaneously.

Supponor Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards not only deliver new dynamic advertising opportunities, through the ability to overlay static on-rink boards with high impact animated assets in live TV broadcast, without physically present animations distracting the players, but they offer an incremental increase in the availability of dasherboard inventory.

Rather than being limited to one physical TV visible arc, the new or extended and targeted inventory can be used by leagues for institutional messages, provide home and away teams and regional sports broadcasters with dedicated feeds for their own markets, and enable relevant messages to be delivered to international broadcast rights holders. The Supponor virtual advertising platform does this by creating an unlimited number of targeted feeds, each with differentiated messages on the Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards that can be delivered to various regional and global TV or OTT audiences.

On the same core platform, Supponor offers a range of additional virtual placement applications such as virtual Plexiglas branding, virtual pitch paint, virtual ribbons, and fully virtual perimeter boards that create multiple opportunities to deliver incremental value through targeted virtual advertising. These can either be delivered as simple single application solutions or as powerful combined packages, both stand-alone or to complement the powerful virtual LED overlay.

Although the Plexiglas around the hockey rink primarily provides protection for the in stadium fans it is highly visible in TV broadcast offering an opportunity for branding if this can be transparent as to not interfere with the view of the action. Supponor powered virtual Plexiglas branding delivers powerful and authentic brand placements on the Plexiglas that are invisible to the in stadium fan and can be used to display targeted commercial or institutional messaging.

Regular integration with multiple local and various production companies ensures the ability to support many modes of operation in all broadcast formats from standard definition (SD), through high-definition (HD) to ultra-high definition (UHD / 4K) and high dynamic range (HDR), both on site at stadiums and in fully remote (REMI) production centres. Advanced visual processing of incoming signals and graphics detection ensures the perfect layering of virtual assets into both clean programmes and dirty finished programmes – either individually or in multiple programmes simultaneously.
